Why are phthalates dangerous?

Researchers have shown phthalates can be toxic to the human body especially in children.  The dangers have become more prevalent as infants became victim to poisoning by swallowing pieces of toys containing phthalates.  One test conducted in mice showed abnormal hormonal levels affecting the reproductive organs.  Other studies showed increased risk of allergies.  The European Commission has published articles warning against certain phthalates, especially DEHP, and has banned production and sale of products containing phthalate.
